Asking For A Friend: What Comes Next?

Most people spend their lives avoiding the question of death, using softer words, building industries around looking younger, pretending it's further away than it is. But the question finds everyone eventually. This week we looked at one of the most important conversations in the Bible: Jesus arriving at the tomb of his friend Lazarus, and the exchange he has with Martha in her grief. Martha had theology but no immediate hope. Jesus reframed everything with five words: I am the resurrection and the life. Not "I will bring resurrection someday." I am the source of it, right now, standing in front of you. We worked through what that means for the moment of death (immediate, conscious presence with Christ), the intermediate state (not the final destination but real and personal, what Scripture calls Paradise), and the final resurrection when Jesus returns and everything is made new. We also took on the hard question: how can a loving God send people to hell? The answer has three parts: hell is a choice not an assignment, love requires justice, and the cross is the clearest evidence of God's character. It all ends with the question Jesus asked Martha, which is the same question he asks every person: Do you believe this?
