Lead Like Jesus: Radically Rooted

Pastor Christopher Coats

In John 15:1–8, Jesus teaches that fruitfulness in life and leadership does not come from effort alone but from abiding in Him. Speaking on the night before the cross, Jesus describes Himself as the true Vine, the Father as the Gardener, and His followers as branches. The image is clear: branches do not produce fruit by striving harder; they bear fruit by remaining connected to the source of life.

The sermon challenged the idea that busyness equals fruitfulness. Many of us are full of activity yet empty of life, trying to lead out of adrenaline, gifting, or momentum rather than communion with Christ. Jesus makes it clear that apart from Him we can do nothing of lasting spiritual value. Abiding is not mystical or complicated; it is daily, relational nearness to Jesus through His word, prayer, and obedience.

Jesus also reframes hardship through the lens of pruning. God prunes fruitful branches so they will become even more fruitful. Pruning is not punishment but preparation. Ultimately, Jesus does not just command abiding; He makes it possible. He was cut off at the cross so we could be brought into life. The invitation is not “Do more for Jesus,” but “Stay close to Jesus.”
