Asking For A Friend: Do I Have To Choose Between Faith and Science?

Psalm 19 helps us answer the question: Do I have to choose between faith and science? David shows us that God is not silent. He speaks through creation, through Scripture, and even through the moral awareness within us.

Creation is what theologians call General Revelation—God making Himself known to all people, at all times, in all places. The heavens “declare” His glory. Science studies the order, structure, and consistency of what God has made, but science cannot tell us everything. It can tell us what something is and how it works, but it cannot ultimately answer who made it, why it exists, or how we can know Him.

That is why David moves from creation to Scripture. Scripture is Special Revelation—God revealing Himself personally and specifically through His Word and ultimately through Jesus Christ. Creation tells us God is there, but Scripture tells us who He is, what He has done, and how we can know Him.

Finally, David turns inward. After seeing God’s glory above him and hearing God’s Word to him, he recognizes the sin within him. He asks, “Who can discern his errors?” The problem is not only what we do wrong, but what we cannot even see in ourselves. That is why we need more than information. We need redemption.

The good news is that God is not only Creator and Speaker—He is Redeemer. The God who designed the world we study is the God who gave His Word to save us, and He invites us not just to understand Him, but to know Him.
