God Among The Ruins : A Vision of Glory Lost

Ezekiel 1 opens in one of Israel’s darkest seasons. God’s people were exiles in Babylon, cut off from the land and the temple. They also thought they were cut off from the presence of God. Yet Ezekiel’s vision shows something astonishing: God does not remain in Jerusalem while His people weep by foreign rivers. He comes to them in exile. The storm, the living creatures, the wheels, and the blazing throne all reveal that God is not limited by geography or circumstances. He is the divine warrior, the holy King, the God who travels toward His people when they feel farthest from Him.

This vision is not meant to dazzle Ezekiel. It is given to reshape him. Before Ezekiel can speak for God, he must see God. Before he can confront Israel’s idolatry, he must fall on his face before God’s glory. And before God judges His people, He shows that He is still with them, still ruling, still holy, and still calling them back. Today, we are reminded that God meets us in our disappointments, our disorientation, and our “Babylons.” He will not be used, controlled, or politicized. His glory recenters our lives around worship, obedience, and surrender.
