Heart of Discipleship:The Word That Guards Doctrine

Good hygiene isn’t just about looking or smelling good—it’s about being healthy. The same is true spiritually. In Titus 1:9 and 2:1, Paul tells Titus to hold firmly to “sound doctrine,” which literally means healthy teaching—the root of our English word hygiene. Just as neglecting physical hygiene leads to disease, neglecting truth leads to spiritual sickness.

What we believe matters because how we believe affects how we behave. People often adjust their beliefs to justify their actions, but only truth keeps us aligned with God’s will. Sound doctrine also leads to spiritual life, freeing us from sin and giving us strength to live faithfully.

Satan’s oldest tactic—“Did God really say?”—still aims to distort God’s truth. That’s why we must be people of discernment, distinguishing not just right from wrong, but right from almost right.

Like the Bereans in Acts 17, we should eagerly receive God’s Word, search the Scriptures daily, and test everything by truth. Spiritual health depends on it. In a world full of half-truths and itching ears, followers of Jesus must stay grounded in Scripture and anchored in truth. In short, be like the Bereans—truth matters.
