Heart of Discipleship: The Word We Cling To

Life does not always feel blessed. In Psalm 119:17–32, the psalmist cries out from a place of pain, depression, and discouragement. He feels the weight of shame, the sting of scorn, and the pressure of sorrow. Yet through it all, he clings to God’s Word. His prayer, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law,” reminds us that true obedience begins with divine illumination. When our hearts are weary, God’s Word reveals His steadfast love and faithfulness.
The psalmist describes himself as a sojourner on the earth, dependent on God’s guidance, and desperate for truth when deceit threatens to take over. As the passage unfolds, he moves from despair to decision: “I have chosen the way of faithfulness… I cling to your testimonies… I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart.” These three resolutions — decision, determination, and desire — mark the path from brokenness to renewal. Even when life feels small and tight, God uses His Word to enlarge our hearts and strengthen our steps.
