The Church Defined: Defined By Faith, Not Tradition

This week’s message explored the powerful example of Stephen, a man full of faith, the Holy Spirit, and wisdom. Chosen to help lead a new ministry of justice and hospitality in the early church, Stephen shows us what it means to live a Spirit-led life that challenges the status quo. In Acts 6–7, he confronts outdated traditions and boldly proclaims that God's presence is not confined to buildings, land, or religious systems. He reminds us that real faith isn’t about preserving the past but about embracing the Spirit’s movement in the present. His speech— the longest in Acts—calls out religious leaders for resisting the Spirit, mistaking sacred spaces and customs for the presence of God. Even as Stephen is martyred, he remains faithful, looking to Jesus and echoing His words of forgiveness. The challenge for us is clear: Are we following the Spirit or clinging to systems? Are we guarding a monument or going on mission?
