Sermon on the Mount: The Blessed Life

Pastor Seth Kirschner

Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount by describing what life in His kingdom looks like through a series of statements known as the Beatitudes. Each one begins with the word “blessed,” which refers to a deep, lasting satisfaction found in God rather than in favorable circumstances. True happiness is not found in wealth, success, comfort, or anything this world offers—it is found in Christ alone.

The first Beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” teaches that the doorway into God’s kingdom is humility. To be poor in spirit is to recognize our spiritual bankruptcy before God and our complete need for His grace. Like a beggar with nothing to offer, we come to God unable to save ourselves and dependent entirely on His mercy.

This realization naturally leads to the second Beatitude: “Blessed are those who mourn.” Jesus is speaking of godly sorrow over sin. When we recognize our condition before God, we grieve our sin and turn to Him in repentance. This sorrow is not an end in itself but a pathway that leads to God’s comfort and forgiveness.

The two thieves crucified beside Jesus illustrate these responses. One remained proud and demanding; the other humbly acknowledged his guilt and asked for mercy. The message of the Beatitudes is clear: true blessing belongs to those who recognize their need for Christ and find their complete satisfaction in Him.
