Lead Like Jesus: Radically Humble
January 11, 2026
Jesus shows what it means to think like a leader with clarity of vision, values, identity, and mission. True humility is expressed through serving.
In John 13, on the night before the cross, Jesus models a radically different kind of leadership. When pressure is highest and time is shortest, He does not grasp for power or recognition. Instead, He picks up a towel and serves. This moment reveals not only what Jesus does, but how He thinks.
Jesus leads with clarity. He understands His season, knowing His hour has come. He is not scrambling or reacting. He leads with clarity of identity, fully secure in where He came from, who He belongs to, and where He is going. Because His identity is secure, He is free to serve without fear. Jesus also leads with clarity of values, choosing the lowest task in the room and doing it Himself. His actions reveal that in God’s kingdom, service matters more than status. Finally, Jesus leads with clarity of mission, calling His followers to imitate His example. Leadership in the kingdom is not positional but imitational.
Peter’s resistance reminds us that humility can feel uncomfortable. Serving exposes pride and confronts our desire for recognition. Yet Jesus makes it clear that humility is not optional for discipleship. Serving is one of God’s primary tools for forming our hearts. As we pick up the towel, God shapes our character, clarifies our calling, and invites us to live with purpose.
